Chinese New Year Feast with Market Tour

This exclusive class includes all brand-new, seasonal dishes plus a market tour in Seattle’s Chinatown to kick off a proper Chinese New Year celebration! The menu includes the popular dim sum dish Lo Bak Go, or Steamed Turnip Cake, that has traditionally been the breakfast of choice on New Year’s Day for my family growing up in Hong Kong. No Cantonese meal is complete without a soup so we will make the classic Slow Cooked Soup with Lotus Root that carries a special new year’s blessing for happy marriages. One of the main courses Spicy Beef Stew happens to be the first dish Mama taught me after I left home so it has a special place in my heart. Another iconic CNY dish is the Buddhist Delight Vegetable Stew that is full of flavors and perfect for the first day of lunar new year when many families go meat-less. Last but not least, the dessert is the Sweet Fried Egg Twist, which is Mama’s favorite snack for Chinese New Year and a long-lost art in Hong Kong’s street food scene.

The class starts with a market tour in Seattle’s Chinatown to get the freshest ingredients for the seasonal dishes we will be making during class. We will visit an iconic market with fresh produce, as well as a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) shop that specializes in healing remedies and dried goods like dry shiitake mushroom. We will browse around, ask questions, and do our shopping too!
