Osaka Street Foods: Okonomiyaki

Discover the irresistible flavors of Japan’s street food scene in Osaka, where it is known for its "Konamon Gourmet", or flour-based cuisine. In this culinary adventure, you’ll unlock the secrets of making two beloved Japanese street foods at home: Okonomiyaki and Takoyaki.

Okonomiyaki is a savory pancake bursting with umami flavors, made with flour, eggs, and shredded cabbage. The name translates to “grilled as you like it,” because you get to choose your own toppings — whether it’s succulent pork belly, fresh shrimp, or a medley of veggies. Want to make yours vegan? Let us know upon registration. Pan-fry it to crispy perfection or cook it on an electric griddle — the choice is yours.

Takoyaki, meaning “octopus fried,” surprises your taste buds with every bite. Imagine tender octopus bits, green onions, and ginger enveloped in a gooey, crispy batter. These piping hot balls are cooked in special molds until they achieve that irresistible golden crust. But wait, there’s more! Our class introduces you to a delightful variation — a vegetarian version with mochi, corn and cheese. It’s a flavor explosion you won’t want to miss!

Pair these street food wonders with a hearty Miso Soup with Tofu and Wakame Seaweed and a refreshing Seasonal Japanese Salad, and you have transported the lively Konamon party from Osaka’s bustling streets right into your own home.

This class is taught by Mikiko Yang. Mikiko's passion for sharing Japanese culture and tradition through food will shine through as she guides you through each step of the cooking process. As a mother of two teenagers and a cultural ambassador for Japan, she understands the importance of passing down these cherished culinary traditions.
